Eyefi Launches Wi-Fi Memory Cards Into the Cloud

Eyefi Launches Wi-Fi Memory Cards Into the Cloud

You’d think most new digital cameras would come with built-in Wi-Fi these days, but only 46% of those that ship in 2014 will have the ability to connect to the Internet.

And sure, there's no denying you can take better quality photos on digital cameras — compared to what’s typically found on a smartphone — but there’s something to say for the convenience of sharing photos directly from a mobile device.

Eyefi, the maker of Wi-Fi SD memory cards (and used to be named "Eye-Fi"), has long turned digital cameras into wireless hotspots, but it’s now offering a full cloud-based storage service called Eyefi Cloud. This means you’ll be able to snap photos on a digital camera and instantaneously access them across all platforms — not just your smartphone and tablets, but the web, too. And your pics will stay there.

Previously, Eye-Fi users could transfer through the cloud, but the service more like a relay to send the photos to a photo service or computer. Last year, Eyefi added instant image transfer from its cards to mobile devices with the launch of its Mobi wireless SD memory card.

The price of the Eyefi Mobi SD card stays the same ($49 for 8B), but it now comes with three months of the cloud service for free. Twelve-month memberships start at $49 for an unlimited number of photos.

With the membership, after setup and as soon as you take some photos with a digital camera equipped with Eyefi, they'll appear across various services and devices. You can manage the photos and albums either via an accompanying app or through the website.

Setup is easy and relatively intuitive. Eyefi works with all the major DSL camera manufacturers — Canon, Nikon, Casio and so on, which install the firmware into their products — so the connected SD cards work directly with them when inserted. On some models, a flashing Wi-Fi symbol signals that the camera is reading the card.

You'll then want to download the Eyefi app, register for an account and then sync the devices you want to the service. You can then go in and share photos and albums with others, as well as make labels and sort by date. A handy feature in the "share" section lets you keep track of who's viewed the pictures, if — for example — you were to post a link to your Facebook profile page.

Existing Mobi SD card users can also get a free trial membership too (and the previous card model is the same as the new one, with a bit of new packaging and design colors).

Final Nikon Coolpix S800c Runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Normally, when we talk about an Android-powered system, we would venture into the realm of smartphones and tablets, and very rarely (if ever) into the world of digital cameras. The line is about to be blurred this day, as the Nikon Coolpix S800c was just announced to come with a copy of the Android operating system – Android 2.3 Gingerbread, to be exact. Yes sir, how does this digital camera shape up in the face of a mobile operating system running in the background? Well, we shall have to take a closer look at its machinations and inner workings right after the jump, shall we not ?

For starters, with Android running on the Nikon Coolpix S800c, you might actually feel that you are using a smartphone at times – until you realize that you are unable to make any phone calls or receive text messages. Good thing it has Wi-Fi connectivity built in though, as it would not be much of an Android device if there were not Internet connectivity to make it interactive.

Setting up the camera for Internet connection using operations which are similar to those used by Android smartphones is possible, not to mention easy. You are also able to post whatever you have snapped and recorded onto social networking sites like Google+, Facebook, and Twitter in a jiffy, but make sure you are within the vicinity of a Wi-Fi network, otherwise it would all amount to nought.

Not only that, the Nikon Coolpix S800c has a new feature known as “Upload to Smart Device”, where this app can be used to transfer high-resolution photos and movies to smart devices which are powered by the Android or iOS operating system, again, over a wireless connection. As for the performance of the Nikon Coolpix S800c, what kind of camera specifications does it pack?

We do know it will come equipped with a 10x optical zoom NIKKOR lens, in addition to a built-in lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function. There is also a backside illumination CMOS sensor that boasts of an effective pixel count of 16-megapixels so that you can shoot images with little noise at the high sensitivities – perfect for low light conditions or night landscapes.

You are also able to record 1920 x 1080p/30-fps full-HD movies with stereo sound, and the included high-performance GPS module is able to record your current position (latitude and longitude) information, applying them to photos and movies as they are recorded.

Canon EOS M Digital Camera Enters into the Mirrorless Territory

Canon has long been a leader in the world of DSLRs, but when it comes to smaller sized shooters, Canon had largely concentrated on commercially viable consumer and prosumer class digital cameras, not really treading on the mirrorless camera technology known as Micro Four Thirds which has been around for some years now. The mirrorless camera comes close to a DSLR in terms of image quality, and yet is far less bulkier in terms of size, not to mention allowing you to change a fair number of lenses (a market which is growing), making it a favorite secondary camera to many.

Canon EOS M Digital Camera 2012

Well, Canon has finally decided to dip their toes into this particular market, by offering the Canon EOS M digital camera which is said to deliver exceptional EOS Full HD video quality with continuous autofocus, not to mention having it accompanied by a notable and expansive range of lenses.

Inspired by EOS technology, the EOS M will be able to leverage on the company’s core technologies, while distilling them down in order to deliver outstanding video capture capabilities without sacrificing image quality when it comes to still shots. Whenever you want to capture still images, the EOS M camera’s 18-megapixel APS-C-sized CMOS image sensor is more than capable of delivering a shallow depth of field, in addition to incredible low-light image quality and a wide dynamic range which is more than capable of capturing rich gradation and detail.

This is the latest member of the EOS family, where both videographers and photographers alike regardless of their level of professionalism and interest, will be able to play nice with a couple of lenses that were specially designed for Canon’s new camera format – namely the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM kit lens and the optional EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. Not only that, you are also able to make full use of your Canon EF and EF-S lenses courtesy of the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M.

Reborn - Samsung Galaxy Camera with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Does the world really need yet another digital camera? The correct answer would be an unequivocal and resounding, “Yes!”. Well, you know that the camera industry is going to continue moving forward with ever higher resolution, not to mention advancements in video recording technology, but how about the operating system of the camera? That has more often than not been overlooked, so Samsung might be on to something here with their maiden attempt at an Android-powered camera, the Samsung Galaxy Camera. Yes sir, we are referring to the mobile operating system from Google that sees actions on smartphones and tablets, now making its way to a camera. How does it fare? Hit the extended post to know more.

Samsung Galaxy Camera with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

The Samsung Galaxy Camera can be said to be a smartphone sans the “phone” bit. After all, it will come with the most recent Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, not to mention carry a slew of connectivity options that would even turn some smartphones green with envy – such as 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi support. I am not quite sure whether mobile carriers will soon put the Samsung Galaxy Camera up for sale on a 2-year contract with a data plan thrown in for good, but time will tell.

Samsung Galaxy Camera with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

The Samsung Galaxy Camera can be said to be the best Android-powered dedicated camera at this point in time, as its only competitor would be the Nikon Coolpix S800c, but that certainly loses out to the Samsung Galaxy Camera in many aspects. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy Camera has the latest Android operating system version as opposed to Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the S800c, while it has a 21x optical touch zoom lens (vs 10x optical zoom on the Nikon) and a 16-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor.

Samsung Galaxy Camera with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

You can choose from three options – a 3G and Wi-Fi version, a 4G LTE and Wi-Fi version or a Wi-Fi-only model. What is your flavor of the day? I suppose that budget also has plenty of say in the final purchase decision.
